Mokume Gane Engagement Rings Types

This time, we talk about mokume gane engagement rings styles. Mokume gane rings are available in different styles, colors, and designs. The color of mokume gane engagement rings depends on the types of metals fused together to create the final, patterned sheet. Among the most widely used metals are: yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and green gold.

Most mokume gane designers will allow you to select which metals you are interested in using, and they will often have sample sheets or rings available to demonstrate what the different shades look like together. While all mokume gane rings use two or three types of metal, you can create a monochrome ring by using different karat values of the same type of metal – a high and a low karat white gold, for example.

The mokume gane technique creates a distinctive pattern on the resulting metal. While that pattern is somewhat random, there are several styles available depending on how the initial sheets are fused together. A “rivers” pattern creates wavy stripes, while an “islands” pattern has distinctive loops and whorls. Each pattern vaguely resembles a topographic map or oil slick. Patterns can run lengthwise or crosswise along the ring, depending on the couple’s preferences.

Mokume gane rings are available in different widths (measured in millimeters) to suit different fingers. The thinner the ring, however, the less pattern will be visible, making the ring less noticeable. When choosing a width, always bear in mind the finger of the wearer: a very thick ring will look clunky and awkward on slender fingers, and a thin ring will appear lost and insubstantial on thicker fingers.

Many mokume gane designers create rings with rims to effectively frame the pattern. These rims can be flat, slightly curved, or even milgrain (tiny beads) to suit the couple’s taste. Rims often serve to highlight the pattern even more, and can be fashioned of any metal in order to provide a consistent edge to the jewelry.

The highlight of mokume gane engagement rings is the distinctive pattern and coloration of the metal, so the use of gemstones is fairly rare. Because most mokume gane engagement rings lack stones, they are highly prized choices for men’s engagement rings or even as wedding bands.
